It all started when…

MWD Grief was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force (IMEF), MP K9 platoon on Camp Pendleton, CA. It was the summer of 2008 when the first three MEF dogs came to the kennels, one of which was Grief.

A dog who was bred and initially trained in Germany completed all of his basic training at the training school on Lackland AFB. Once he was certified in the Patrol & Detection Program he was able to be sent to the Marine Corps and be paired with a handler.

That same summer MWD Grief was paired with Alfred Brenner who was also fresh out of the school house. Their day to day work schedule over the first few weeks consisted of grooming, training, and bonding exercises. In October 2008, Grief and Brenner completed pre-deployment training at Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona to become acclimated to the harsh terrain overseas.

The team spent the next several months certifying and training in many facets of war to ensure mission ready capabilities. Grief was even selected to attend the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh to work with the Secret Service.

Grief’s story changes when he became apart of the largest deployment of dog teams in our nations history since Vietnam that summer of 2010. “Surviving with Grief” chronicles the events of day to day operations, all the way to the very end.
